The Great Australian Bight is where majestic whales go every year to feed, play and raise their young. It has the highest concentration of dolphins anywhere in the world. And 85% of the marine life in the Bight are found nowhere else on earth.

A place this important needs permanent protection from risky deepwater oil drilling. With the election coming up, the Federal opposition has an opportunity to show leadership and make this an election where our oceans and climate are a priority.

OIL AND WHALES DON'T MIX

OIL COMPANIES ARE CLOSING IN ON THE BIGHT

Imagine Bondi, Bells Beach, Wine Glass Bay, Kangaroo Island or Esperance smothered in toxic black oil. That same oil would suffocate the whales, dolphins and fish of the Bight, causing death and irreversible harm. Labor has shown leadership on ocean protection before. They have an opportunity to lead the way again, but they need to know we care about stopping oil drilling in the Bight.

Email Labor Leader Bill Shorten, Deputy Leader Tania Plibersek and Shadow Environment Minister Tony Burke now.

EMAIL LABOR’S LEADERSHIP NOW AND CALL ON THEM TO PROTECT THE BIGHT

LAST WEEK, NORWEGIAN OIL COMPANY EQUINOR PUBLISHED ITS DRILLING PLANS. ITS OWN DOCUMENTS SHOW A SPILL FROM ITS PROPOSED DRILLING SITE COULD WASH UP ANYWHERE FROM WA TO SYDNEY.

Equinor’s well would be drilled in water almost a kilometre deeper than Deepwater Horizon well, making any problems much harder to fix. Oil in Bight is just too risky.
