Ban the bag: Western Australia

Plastic pollution is killing our marine life. 30% of the world’s turtles and 90% of seabird species have now ingested plastic debris.

One of the serious offenders is plastic bags. Australians use around 4 billion plastic bags every year - that’s a whopping 10 million or so each day. Clean Up Australia estimates that around 150 million of these end up in our waterways and ocean.

Why is this important?

Around 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean every year. We have to act now to clean up our seas. South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and ACT already have successful plastic bag bans in place. Queensland has also committed to banning plastic bags by 2018. It’s time for New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia to step up and take plastic bags off the menu for marine life.

Sign the petition and call on the State Environment Ministers to ban plastic bags now.

How it will be delivered

We want to empower local champions in each State to deliver the petition to their Environment Minister.

If you're interested in being the local champion for Western Australia, we'd love to hear from you!

Reasons for signing

  • i feel strongly about the pollution of our oceans and waterways with plastic and the terrible toll it has on marine life
  • Every piece of plastic ever produced is still on earth. We need to reduce how much is being produced and think about how we use it
  • All disposable plastics should be banned. We can and should introduce reusable solutions.
