Your 2023 impact

The power of a movement takes millions
- and millions can make dreams come true.
A look back at 2023
This year, through our campaigns we've investigated and exposed environmental crimes at an epic scale. Through lobbying, non-violent peaceful actions, and public mobilization, we've driven transformative change while championing solutions.
Standing against Woodside
This year was a huge one for the fight against Australia’s biggest climate threat - Woodside.
- Sailing the waves of change: The Rainbow Warrior sailed from Albany to the Kimberley - documenting the beauty of WA’s coastline and meeting with local communities who are fighting to protect our oceans and climate from Woodside.
- Forcing accountability: We reminded the world that Woodside had left its oil towers in the ocean to rot - and it finally started to clean up its trash.
- Your voices amplified: 25,000 of you emailed your local MP. They listened and have started calling out Woodside in Parliament on your behalf.
- Mass mobilisation: 400,000 of you signed the petition to stop Woodside - and we shared your message with key decision makers in Canberra. Our meetings even got some media attention.
- Rising to new heights: When Woodside started seismic blasting, 4 brave Greenpeace activists climbed a crane in Perth to expose the fossil fuel giant and share a clear message - Woodside must be stopped.
- Confronting Woodside: Greenpeace has confronted the fossil fuel giant at sea, outside its office, inside its AGM and called out Woodside online, in the news and in Parliament.
- Took Woodside to court: We’re alleging that Woodside is deceiving Australians about the impact its dirty gas is having on our climate.
Next year we’ll be ramping up the pressure to make sure that Labor doesn’t give the green light to Woodside’s Burrup Hub.
Pacific Climate Justice
We deepened collaboration and connection with communities in the Pacific, gathered testimonies and built political momentum for the landmark case on human rights and climate change that will be heard at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) next year.
- Pressure for action: We pressured Australian and global leaders to support the Pasifika-led case connecting climate change and human rights at the world's highest court. If this case succeeds, the world can legally hold big polluters to account for the climate harm caused in the Pacific and other climate-vulnerable communities.
- Pacific journey: The Rainbow Warrior sailed to Vanuatu, Tuvalu and Fiji and we were welcomed with open arms and hearts by our Pacific vuvale (family).
- Pacific Stories: We spotlighted and compiled Pacific stories and testimonies to be delivered as evidence directly at the world's highest court. Here is one of many powerful stories from Flora Vano revealing how the women of Vanuatu played a key role in keeping their communities safe during two back-to-back category 5 cyclones earlier this year.
- Advocating at COP28: We participated in COP28 alongside youth activists from Fiji and Tuvalu in Dubai to urge world leaders to listen to Pasifika voices during climate negotiations.
- Petition delivery: At Parliament House we handed in signatures from more than 25,000 supporters asking Foreign Minister Penny Wong to support the case for climate justice at the world’s highest court.
Electrify transport
We rallied to make electric vehicles cheaper and more accessible in Australia by pressuring big car companies and the government to commit to clean air, a safer climate and healthier communities.
- Mobilising for change: Over 28,000 supporters took online and in person action demanding corporates like Coles, ALDI and Woolworths to commit to renewable powered transport, and Federal MPs and Senators to urgently introduce strong standards for cleaner transport.
- Warning against lobbying: We made our way to Canberra to warn the Government not to listen to the petrol car lobby in their attempts to block pollution caps for new cars.
- Corporate shift: Woolworths, one of Australia's largest retail companies made a commitment to transition their 1,200 home delivery trucks to 100% electric by 2030.
- Advocating for EVs: Trained volunteers participated in ‘Electrify Your Electorate: Canberra Lobby Day,’ meeting MPs and delivering detailed briefings on the advantages of electric vehicles in Parliament.
- Challenged misleading claims: We followed our expose of Toyota’s dirty car lobbying tricks with filing a complaint against Toyota to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to investigate whether environmental claims by Toyota are misleading or deceptive.
- EV myths busted: We cut through the confusion and shared the truth about electric cars. From battery concerns to range anxiety, charging, climate impacts, mining and more - we covered it all.
- Ranked fleets in Australia: We ranked 30 companies with large fleets in Australia to see who’s leading the charge in electrifying their fleets – and who’s stuck in the slow lane.
Protecting our Oceans
Life on our blue planet depends on our oceans – and 2023 was a monumental year for their protection.
- Global Oceans Treaty: After 20 years of campaigning and with the support of 5.5 million people, we secured a Global Oceans Treaty which aims to protect 30% of our oceans by 2030. Now, we need to ratify the Treaty by mid 2025 for it to come into effect.
- Exposed deep sea mining: We shed light on a new destructive industry – deep sea mining. Across the world, over a million people are standing up to greedy corporations that want to mine the sea floor.
- Sea protests: We protested for over 310 hours, on kayaks and small boats, at sea blocking The Metal Company’s(TMC) ship from collecting data as part of its plan for the first-ever deep sea mining application.
- Occupied TMCs Vessel: Brave Greenpeace International activists scaled and occupied TMC’s vessel for 113 hours disrupting their expedition
- Won land-mark ruling: A Dutch court upheld Greenpeace’s right to peacefully protest, ruling that while activists must disembark from the TMC vessel, they can continue the protest on water.
- Disrupted deep sea mining industry: Our action disrupted TMC’s expedition and shook the deep sea mining industry to its core.
We’re now calling on the Australian government to urgently ratify the Global Oceans treaty and create a marine sanctuary for the South Tasman Sea and Lord Howe Rise - sign the petition now!
Greenpeace is 100% funded by people just like you
Did you know: We don’t take any money from government or corporations, allowing us to stay fiercely independent in our fight for a greener, more peaceful future.
